Paul Hughes' Biography & Career Summary

With a career spanning more than 37+ years in the Information Technology industry, Paul has been responsible for the management and successful outcome of numerous projects across various countries in a variety of industries. Focusing predominantly in the travel and transportation industry since 1990 including IATA, BSP (Bank Settlement Plan), two of Australia & New Zealand’s largest travel agencies, tour wholesale, air ticket consolidator, Airports (Federal Airport’s Corporation, Australia) and two of the world’s Global Distribution Systems (GDS), Paul has developed and implemented state of the art solutions and strategies, giving each of these organisations a leading edge in the business arena.

Dedicated to tailoring business driven solutions designed to meet the organisation’s goals and objectives, Paul is able to determine the current and future IT needs of clients through consultation with people at all levels regarding existing work systems, then providing recommendations, budgets, implementation strategies and technical architectures. He has directed the integration of IT operations, computer hardware, operating systems, communications, software applications and data processing and determined priorities for systems developments, maintenance and operational frameworks including process design and procedural systems. Similarly, he has developed and implemented numerous specific Crisis Management, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plans, on multiple sites on a global scale while working with budgets of up to AU$10 million and always finishing within specified time frames and budgets.

Career Summary

Senior Management Consulant for IT Management Consulting firm specialising in "Business-driven Internet & E-commerce Solutions".  Some of my senior management and consulting assignments I have been involved in include:

  • Defined products and payment archictures for Promisant Ltd so they can provide payment solutions to the Travel & Transportation Industry.  Specific solutions address multi-currency e-commerce payment solutions for airlines, travel agencies and GDS (Global Distribution System).
  • Provided recommendations to a large Government Owned Corporation on strategies, costs, technologies and short-term Quick Wins for the organization's travel operations.
  • Provided product management and development expertise to design, specify and architect e-commerce and e-payment solutions for the global travel and transportation industry. This included design and architecture for QSI's e-payment solution used bySabre Merchant Pay, which provides Sabre's agents with ability to make credit card payments using their existing CRS terminals.
  • Senior project manager for a new Internet Travel initiative (fare1.com). This e-commerce web project was launched in the USA and in the UK. It is a B2B (business-to-business) virtual shopping centre that allows travel agents to buy products from tour operators, airlines, car hire companies and ticket consolidators. Led a team of 20 developers, plus external software suppliers, spread across 5 countries - USA, UK, Germany, India, and Singapore. Also managed technology for the company's B2C (business-to-consumer) travel web site.

  • Business Process Re-engineer participating in HP's worldwide "Next Generation User Support" project. The project sought to dramatically improve how user support is given and received throughout HP worldwide. Developed new business processes for the worldwide User Support (Help Desk) organisation.
  • Project Manager at Asia Travel Network, Sdn Bhd for implementation of an e-commerce enabled discounted airfares booking system.
  • Project manager at Hewlett-Packard GmbH [Boeblingen, Germany] for a Europe-wide Y2K disaster recovery and crisis management project. 
  • Developed a three year Information Systems Strategic Plan and Information Technology Architecture for Gladstone Area Water Board [Queensland, Australia],
  • Developed a Technical Architecture for Internet and E-commerce for the Department of State Development [Queensland, Australia] including business-to-business and consumer-to-business settlement systems and a knowledge management architecture.
  • Developed Internet and E-commerce strategies and technical architecture for Asia Pacific's largest CRS (computer reservation system), Abacus International [Singapore].  
  • Developed Internet, E-commerce and Knowledge Management strategies for Gullivers Pacific [Auckland, New Zealand] - one of New Zealand's largest Travel Agency chains and Tour Wholesaler.

Paul's prior Senior IT Management experience includes:

  • IT Manager forPractical Education Institute (NZ) Ltd in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Developed a three-year IT Strategic Plan for Student Management Systems, Document Management, Records Management, Content Management and e-Learning systems. Responsible for IT systems supporting on-campus students and over 5,000 distance learning students across New Zealand.
  • IT Manager for FAC (Federal Airports Corporation, Sydney, Australia) involved in the IT aspects of Australia's Airport Privatisation project (Unix Server, Financial & Airport Applications, Disaster Recovery and Contingency Planning, Lotus Notes and NT LAN implementations into 19 Airports) and Y2K (Year 2000) Compliance for the FAC-managed Airports, and  
  • IT Manager for Flight Centre responsible for the development of the IT Strategy and project management of an IT hardware and systems deployment into 200 shops in four countries of over 1,200 Apple Macs.  
  • IT Manager for IATA in Sydney responsible for the Bank Settlement Plan Systems which handled Travel Agent to Airline business-to-business e-commerce settlement of over $3.3 billion per year,  
  • Senior Manager, Systems and Operations for IATA (International Air Transport Association) in Switzerland,  
  •  Data Centre Manager and Technical Support Management positions in two of Canada's leading Oil & Gas Exploration companies - Alberta Energy and Mobil Oil Canada [Calgary, Alberta Canada], and  
  •  IT Manager for Prentice-Hall Canada [Toronto, Canada].
